English schools in Japan

Hiroshima, Koyo
School:Hiroshima International School (HIS)

HIS is on a hillside in Koyo, Asakita-ku, which is a quiet northern suberb of Hiroshima. The school has a wooded mountain on one side, and views over the neighbourhood on the other.

The School
Hiroshima International School was founded in 1962. For over forty years it has provided a first class English-language education to both expatriate and Japanese students in the Hiroshima area. In recent years it has added Secondary Grades and now caters for children from three to eighteen.

The school moved to its current purpose-built site in 1986. It is located on the edge of the city in a quiet residential district. The green of the forest is a stone's throw away and the views in all directions are impressive. It is a safe and inspiring environment for children. The school's facilities include a large gymnasium, a library, a music room, an art room, a dance studio, an I.T. laboratory, a science laboratory, numerous subject specific rooms and an enclosed playground. Five new classrooms were added in 2005 and four more in 2007. We are a growing school.

The Students
Our students come from every corner of the globe. Approximately 30% of them are Japanese. About 15% are from the USA. Another 10% are from Korea and the remaining 45% are from an ever-changing list that at the start of the 2007-2008 school year included India, Germany, the UK, Russia, Mexico, Serbia, China, Sweden, Australia, Ireland, Spain, Peru, Argentina and the Netherlands. We are truly ‘international'.

The Teachers
HIS only employs teachers with significant international experience. All are fully qualified and are native speakers of English or are bilingual. In August 2007 the school employed teachers from the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. Japanese is studied by all students and is taught by fully-qualified Japanese teachers.

Our Curriculum
HIS is proud to be an IB World School. We teach the IBO Primary Years Programme (PYP) in our Elementary School and the IB Diploma Programme to our older students in Grades 11 and 12. (Find out more about the IBO at www.ibo.org). We are also in the process of gaining auhtorisation to offer IGCSEs in Grades 9 and 10.

Our Ethos
We strive to be an authentically international school. In other words, we try not to be too ‘American' or ‘British' (or ‘Japanese'!) and we hope we afford all cultures equal respect. That said, our values and educational philosophy are rooted firmly in the Western tradition and English is the language of instruction throughout the school. We are proud that people describe the school as "friendly", "welcoming" and "caring" and we are equally proud of the growing reputation we are earning for high academic standards.
