Several people of influence tried to do something about English spelling in the last few centuries.
Robert McCormick, who ran the Chicago Tribune, instituted some minor simplifications that the paper used for half a century. Not much of anything gained acceptance. The main problem back then was the humongous cost of distribution. With computers and the internet everywhere, it now costs next to nothing to introduce a spelling system.

Now the problem is that most reformers think there must be a comprimise to appease everybody who already knows English. They fail to see that this results in hard to learn systems that wont have any lasting benefit. Preserving useless details of the existing mess means everybody has to memorize a bunch of words again.
