Re: Avoid korea and China at all cost.

Most people who are english teachers have a university degree. They may not be doing well at home job-wise but your suggestion that they should enjoy abuse because they have no bargaining power is both inaccurate (that they have no bargaining power, have to work at McD's at home) and unbalanced. I will try to promote mutually beneficial and fair work environments for employers and teachers rather than telling teachers to accept abuse because they are supposedly in a weak position.

Total nonsense. This is my third year in Korea:
OVERTIME: YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORK OVERTIME
CONTRACT CHANGES: NOT THAT I KNOW OF
NO STRICT DRESS CODE
AGE DISCRIMINATION: I AM FIFTY

Good to have you back.

Regarding the OP. Everything is relative. Overtime, safety standards, the ability to sue your boss because you burnt your finger on the coffee pot, these are benefits that people in some countries have gotten used to.

People in other lands might be used to working from sun-up to sun-down for a wage of a dollar or two a day.

For many of us our current situation falls somewhere in between the two extremes. If your current job (supposing you have one) is better than what's on offer in China or Korea, stay where you are.

If, like me, Korea or China offers a better deal, then go there.

If you are a fresh eager face keen on experiencing life in other lands and cultures, then you have to make your own decision.

Be careful and selective in when and where you go, but blanket statements like AVOID X, Y & Z COUNTRIES AT ALL COSTS are ridiculous.

One man's poison might well be another man's meat. (Women also invited to either meat or poison, LOL)

Steve,

Well, well backpacker. Time for you to split, break the contract, go home and live with your parents, grand parents, older sister. Of course there are great job opportunities waitng for you; macdonals, kfc. Oh, I think those dream jobs require uniform and grooming. Hurry up, I heard here from a happy esl teacher that there is a crowd applying for those dream jobs from you come from.

Next,

Incheon
