2 billion English speakers... that came as a surprise to me.

There is no mention, whatsoever, of 2 billion English speakers. It is claimed, however, that the combined population of the nations in which English is supposedly an official language, totals 2.135 billion.

Preceding the reference to the aggregate population is a statement that India (the population of which makes up more than half of the 2.135 billion) has approximately 100,200,000 speakers of English.

What language, prey tell, do Africans learn as a first foreign tongue? Indeed, how many foreign 'tongues' (obviously not including their mother tongue) do Africans learn ?
