The thread originator chose not to 'cut and paste' the full Wikipedia article; he / she omitted the foreword warning:-

This article or section has multiple issues. Please help improve the article or discuss these issues on the talk page.

* It needs additional references or sources for verification. Tagged since October 2007.

* It may contain original research or unverifiable claims. Tagged since October 2007.

* Its factual accuracy is disputed. Tagged since February 2008.

The article provide only 4 references; 2 for the India, 1 for the Philippines and 1 for Jaimaca, despite presenting information for 54 nations.

The article is also notable for its lack of reference to English literacy skills; it refers only to speaking ability.

2 billion English speakers... that came as a surprise to me.

There is no mention, whatsoever, of 2 billion English speakers. It is claimed, however, that the combined population of the nations in which English is supposedly an official language, totals 2.135 billion.

Preceding the reference to the aggregate population is a statement that India (the population of which makes up more than half of the 2.135 billion) has approximately 100,200,000 speakers of English.

Do you have a math shortcoming or a reading comprehension shortcoming?

Africans seem to learn English as a second foreign tongue quite effortlessly.

What language, prey tell, do Africans learn as a first foreign tongue? Indeed, how many foreign 'tongues' (obviously not including their mother tongue) do Africans learn ?
