not necessarily! Link

Agreed - don't pay recruiters a penny, but there are loads who do a decent job and if you're starting out they can be a great help getting you a job and settling you into a new country.

#2 Parent Dos - 2004-12-31
Nope.

They do it because recruiters rip schools off just as much as they rip of the teachers.

and avoid schools recruiting on the internet

Most of them do it directly because they don't have
a red penny to pay a recruiter. Ty

Avoid recruiters at all costs Link

My advice is to just avoid recruiters at all costs.

If any recruiters ask you for money that is a big NO NO NO!

>YEAH, I WOULD QUESTION THAT, AS WELL. FOR A MOMENT THERE, IT SOUNDED LIKE A TAKEOFF OF THE DIANA ROSS HIT (1965):

Ooh baby love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
But all you do is treat me bad
Break my heart and leave me sad
Tell me, what did I do wrong
To make you stay away so long

ON SECOND THOUGHT, MAYBE NOT....?

Cheers,
Ellis

I would question the wisdom of dealing with anybody who calls themselves "Baby Honey," unless of course she works for a massage parlor or whorehouse.

Bruce ...

I empathize with you COMPLETELY! As you have probably read, I was also victimized by similar LIES! OF COURSE, a wee bit more investigation would help before spending one's hard-earned money to make such a cumbersome journey. Nonetheless, despite all the time you spend on researching ANY organization, IF they're robbers at heart, and IF it has been PREdecided that your contract terms are "subject to alteration" once you have arrived, you are, indeed, a cooked goose! However, in all fairness to the honest employers and agencies operating out there, yes, you ARE most definitely taking a chance by hiring instructors "sight-unseen," as it were. But, perhaps a little more investigation on YOUR part could be conducted. The telephone is a great instrument to use to check up on a teacher's credentials before hiring him/her. Also, Mr. Employer, please remember that a round-trip ticket is QUITE a bit of money for the average ESL teacher to afford. At least HALF of that should be PREpaid by YOU... that is, once you have investigated and approved of a candidate. But, there are still enough of the bad guys out there. And, as our dear friend Mr. Xi once aptly put it, "A peasant is always a peasant!" I agree with you wholeheartedly, Xi, albeit a GREATER number of answers to this calamity lie on YOUR &#!@! side of the Pacific!!! Why not start THERE?

Re: LIES...LIES...LIES

Xi, in which part of the website you gave do schools actually write about bad esl teachers? Thanks.

Re: LIES...LIES...LIES

That is cool, as it will give us a less biased picture of the situation. Hear out both sides and be the judge.

I forgot to add. Bruce, perhaps "Tony" and "Baby Honey" are only using the name of the middle school even though they have no actual connections there. It's worth checking out.

Any good English teacher in China is precious, thousand of jobs open. Bruce Stout (LIES...LIES...LIES post) either worked for a an anti business boss or crazy. I never heard of any anti business boss or crazy boss in China (Im sure they exist though). For a Chinese employer right now to fire a good English teacher is crazy. I question how good of a teacher and person is Bruce Stout. I hope the other side of the story can be heard. Yan

Go as far as China to teach is a real adventure and risk at times, mostly when you are paying your own plane ticket. Could you or anybody else here complainig, please tell me what homework-research you did before accepting this job and take the plane to CN. My experience is that bad schools-recruiters attract bad teachers. A careless teacher that does not do his research or where he-she is going is a Bad Teacher and will do the same careless things in any good school. Looking forward for you or anybody else comments. Unless Bruce can provide a good feedback. I think that he, TONY and > BABYHONEY? Are all the same. Just too bad that schools in China don't provide a net-list of terrible teachers. The list will be sooooooooo long. Just too bad these are the same teachers always complaining.

Do you know their real names? That would help a lot. If not, just post your warning in other forums (be sure to avoid HANGZOU MIDDLE SCHOOL at all costs, especially when the "recruiters" are Tony and/or (?) Baby Honey.)

LIES...LIES...LIES

The legal situation and the rip-off in China is rampant. I was cheated by a person calling himself TONY in Hangzhou. I want everyone to know of him. TONY is based in Beijing and Tianging. He sent me to a middle school in Hangzhou and they did not pay me nor did he. The school had no intent of keeping me and TONY said that they did. TONY did not pay a very good employee as well. What can be done to tell everyone to beware of TONY and Hangzhou Middle School?

A woman calling herself BabyHoney gave me a job at a railway repair depot. When I got there I was told that my only job was to train the leader, but that he was leaving for a few days. I had nothing to do for about 10 days. I ate, watched TV, and drank some. I was told upon his return that there was no way to make me legal and that I not only had to leave, but would receive no pay let alone the separation allowance.

What can be done to warn all future teachers to avoid TONY and BABYHONEY?

Sincerely,
Bruce Stout
