and you call yourself "teacher"? - Teachers Discussion

A "learned"(you are NOT an idiot not to understand the meaning of the word, right?) teacher never call names to someone who committed mistakes, be he/she is goaded beyond endurance.

Calling black serpent an idiot instead of giving him/her a nice advice is just showing the world how ill-mannered you are. I wonder how you treat your students who piss you off. Poor creatures to have you as their "teacher".

Your post is a sore to the eye.

Tsk, tsk, tsk..............

Probably is - Teachers Discussion

It probably is because she's Asian that she is treated differently. As soon as somebody starts pushing their bets by playing the race card, the whole thing gets ugly. If you walk into my office and tell me I should hire you because you are Asian, or in spite of being Asian, I'll tell you to get lost. If you walk into my office and tell me I should hire you instead of somebody else because you have a better education, better training, more experience and you are more professional, you'll be at the top of the list--as long as you can back it all up.

Something that it seems most responders to the thread have forgotten is that employers in China are not restricted in hiring whom they want. If they want to hire blonde haired, blue eyed white folks from where ever it is they came from, they can, and they can certainly ignore the rest. It's entirely up to them. The employers and students are the ones that decide who is a native speaker, and who is not. If they decide they want an English speaker from a western country, with a neutral accent, it's their perogative to find and hire them. If they want to be suspicious of an Asian's accent that it may not be authentic, even if they are 4th, 5th, 6th generation Asian American from California, well it's their loss. Especailly if they decide to go with a loser white guy that's never had a legit job before and just playing teacher so he can see the world. They aren't any more useful to an employer or group of students than is the Asian that speaks English as a second language at a mostly competent level. How useful is a Filipino in an adult conversational English classroom when the book has lessons about--and the students have questions about--life in America or Europe and the teacher says "I don't know.....I've never been there. I'm from the Phillipines."

The whole discussion is really rather ridiculous. There's Asians that are stamping their feet demanding respect as teachers, but can't write effectively--even internet forum posts. On the one hand, they complain about how poorly they are treated when they do get jobs, and quit. Then they complain about being passed over for other jobs in lieu of a white girl from God knows where. And if their English is so smashing, why not just get a job in their own home town and probably live at least as good of a lifestyle as the fancy ESL teacher? And the Americans and Brits and Canadians and whomever else are all uppity and defensive because why? Because you have somebody that doesn't measure up to your standards working next to you? Jeesh, that just makes you look better. The only problem is that you have to pick up their classes when they get canned or leave town in the middle of the night. It's all just a bunch of office politics, and nobody even works with each other! How pathetic.

I Doubt It's Because You Are Asian - Teachers Discussion

I read the all the posts with regards to this first one on obtaining a teaching position within China. I doubt very much that the reason you are unable to obtain a position in China is because your Asian.

As for the posts discussing race or what is a grammatically correct sentence, that is all moot.

What it's important here is the frustration you feel because you believe the reason you are not being given a chance is due to how you look. Why not have a non-partisan party review your photo as well as resume and see if they can offer their opinion as well as suggestions to how you can improve your overall presentation.

It can be very frustrating when it comes to job searching for the right job in the country of your choice. I suggest conducting more research. That may not be what you want to hear, but the more sites you look on, the more you will get a feel for the types of teaching jobs that are out there and also have the opportunity to adjust your resume and/or photo by giving yourself more choices.

You will find the right school and when you do, just remember that they will be very lucky to have you.

Your English - Teachers Discussion

No jibes at all in what I said - just the truth, which is more than can be said of your silly, childish reply. I am no "great grammarian" - I don't need to be to say that your English is no good. I am competent and you are not and I think I need say no more than that

"Capitalisation" is the British spelling of that word. The version "Capitalization" is uniquely American. "American" English is not true English as it deviates from the English upon which it is based.

Get your facts straight and it may help you to make less of a fool of yourself than you have already done.

Incidentally I am not racist at all, it is you who sounds more racist than everyone else in the thread. I simply recognise that Asians who speak English, no matter how technically well (or badly - like you) - simply do not have the English culture necessary for a true and in depth understanding of the English language. If anyone wants to learn to speak Chinese for example, They would be wise to employ a Chinese person. If they want to learn to speak Kiswahili, they would be wise to employ an East African person and if they want to learn English they would be wise to employ an English person, certainly not an Asian. If you believe that to be a "racial" statement then you are sadly wrong and guilty of racialism yourself. It is not racial to recognise the differences that distinguish one nationality of people from another. Remarks only become racial when they are specifically aimed at discriminating against one or more people on the singular basis of their racial origins alone. Or didn;t you know that?

If I want to learn to speak a particular Asian language and I place an advertisement for a native of that particular country - and let's suppose it was your Country - would you then jump up and down and cry that I was being racial?

Please answer this question in a straightforward way without any of your silly posturing.

John

Gaps - Teachers Discussion

I think Bridger wasn't thinking about your own self-segregation. He was probably thinking about the segregation on your part of others. Or at least between Asians and everybody else. You are the one that is noticing whether people are Asian or not, and treating them in such ways as you want them to be treated, not in the way they deserve to be treated on a human level.

You might want to read your own posts with a less narrow mind.

wake up........smell the coffee - Teachers Discussion

Your user name itself has negative overtones in Western cultures. But it is your use of the English language that raises eyebrows. That you are not proficient with its use is not something that should invite scorn; however, since you profess to be a teacher you should expect to be held accountable for said lack of proficiency. On the other hand, if you were to tell me that you are endeavoring, through dilligent study, to improve your grammar and writing skills my eyebrows would return to their proper alignment. (A first step might be to realize/realise that there is a difference between British English and American English spelling.)

Now, lest you take this personally, you would do well to recognize that the question of professionalism and accountability in China - a recent thread in this forum - is a question that has been raised in good faith and with concern for the well being of Chinese students. Race is not the issue here. Prejudice? Maybe a little. But that prejudice is directed toward attitude and ability and not toward race or skin color.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I agree with this gap person. It's unwise to segregate yourself due to ethnic or nationalist pride. And counterproductive to the advancement of the human race. Your English is Crap! - Teachers Discussion

With English as bad as yours and you presuming to defend all Asian teachers - I wonder whether your terrible English is typical among those you defend. It is just your kind of English that has contributed greatly to the bias against Asian teachers.

Why don't you go away and learn how to compose sentences accurately and use capitalisation where English grammar requires it.

Have a nice day

I thought this topic is by far hibernating somewhere.
Are there still individuals out there ashamed to have
came from an Asian country? If so, pack your things and go somewhere in the antarctic or north pole or suit yourself in the statue of liberty or better burn yourself in Mars.

Why is there a need to be shameful just because you are Asian? What difference does it make?

race - HUMAN.

I AM PROUD to be an Asian and that's self-evident truth.

Thanks, kababayan, and congratulations for your achievement! (Wow!)

I don't think there's a need for me to be proud of my ancestry. I already am : ). I just wanted to ask for practical and doable suggestions on how to get my foot on the door in getting an ESL job in China despite my "non-native English-speaking origin."

My part of Mexico is very quite at the moment, nearly all the students are on vacation. You may be right, but some of the white male teachers are friendly too, like me for example. I don't work in China, but in Mexico, and although some local people say the majority of English teachers are very arrogant and don't mix with Mexicans this is usually because they can't speak the language and are scared by unfamiliar cultures.

If you are going to teach in another country I think you should have the decency to learn some of the local language and to meet local people, not just your boss/coworkers and students.

Congratulations on your good work, nice to hear you are recognized and respected as a good teacher.

The problem is not racism. What they think is that Asians are not native speakers of the English language. Thus they can't instruct well. This is a pragmatic way of thinking.Just continue searching and one day you will be bless with one.I wish you the best

Re: advice needed

Gee, thanks for you posts. No, I am not Japanese, but I have taught English in Japan for a year. (I am Filipino-Chinese, by the way).

I easily got a teaching job in Japan, so I thought I could do the same in China. One factor, I think, is that I was already in Japan when I applied for the job. The pay may be much higher in Japan, but I often get headaches trying to stretch the budget, and the work hours are extremely long. So, I thought I needed a change of location and China was the first country that popped in my mind.

Are you from Japan? Japanese are seen in China the same that Chinese are seen in Japan. Philipinnes citizens are doing ok in China teaching E, they are considered hard workers and rarely complaint. My suggestions, do a recording of your voice, mp3, wave. Sent this recording with your picture, resume and cover letter to schools. Of course if you really want to teach in China, travel to China in your own and apply in person to many schools. If you are not a mental case and treat other with respect, you will succeed.
