The English Language Center (http://www.aauj.edu/AAUJ_site/centers/ELC.htm)

The university provides English language instruction to students from all departments at the English Language Center (ELC). The ELC uses up to date pedagogical methods and modern technology. Students gain a level of English language proficiency which facilitates their academic study at the university.

The Program: The Center runs three levels of English classes: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Beginning students have five class-hours per week, while Intermediate and Advanced students have three class-hours per week. Advanced students receive three credit hours for their English class, while Intermediate students receive two credit hours. New students take a placement test at the beginning of their first semester. At the end of each semester, teachers determine future placement based on students' work and development in the classroom.

The Faculty: The English Language Center hires native and non-native English speakers to teach in the classroom. There are currently 12 faculty and staff members.

The Curriculum: All English classes follow a skills-based approach to language learning with a focus on academic reading and writing, especially at the upper levels. Teachers follow a curriculum guide in planning their classes, while using flexible teaching methods.

Language Lab: All students taking English spend two hours each week in the Language Lab. Students have the opportunity to practice listening and speaking skills on an individual and group basis. Students listen to a variety of materials such as lectures, interviews, conversations, and songs. They discuss issues and ideas with their classmates as well as give presentations. They work on their pronunciation. Lab Supervisors guide students in their work.
