Herlufsholm was established in 1565 as a boarding school for boys. Day students were admitted from 1966 and girls as both boarders and day pupils in 1985.

Herlufsholm aims to provide a Danish framework, encompassing Christian and democratic ideals, in an historic setting, for the optimal preparation of young people- irrespective of background and financial means – for their adult lives. Herlufsholm remains a boarding school rich in tradition, but it is also a modern internationally oriented institution. Both in and out of the classroom, pupils at Herlufsholm acquire academic and personal skills. The aim is that the students will leave the school with the best qualifications as good, responsible citizens, able to make a positive contribution to national and international society.

Academic Aims:

· To be first in school development – nationally and internationally.

· To maintain the academic standard and characteristic profile continuously.

· To prepare students for Danish and International exams.

· To prepare students for further education and provide adequate professional guidance for them.

· To provide qualified teaching, so that it has satisfied the needs and expectations of the individual when the next step in their education is taken.

· To teach the students how to use and develop their abilities and interests. At the same time, to explore their own limits through a programme that encompasses sports and cultural activities as well as a voluntary and social welfare programme.

· To ensure that students who don’t have Danish as their mother tongue, learn to understand and speak Danish.
