West Nairobi School is an international Christian community located in Kenya founded on biblical truths, existing to educate and nurture students to become responsible citizens and devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

PURPOSE: To provide high-quality North American education at a reasonable cost to children of Christian missionaries, Kenyan nationals, and expatriates.

SCHOOL: WNS is operated by the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS), and offers a Kindergarten through Grade 10 North American education in a Christian environment for families in the Nairobi area. Grade 11 will begin during the 2008-2009 academic year, with Grade 12 beginning in 2009. Founded in 1996, the school is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and is a candidate for accreditation with both.

CHRISTIAN EMPHASIS: WNS is operated in a Christian environment, with teachers instructing from a Biblical perspective. Religious instruction is incorporated into the curriculum, and morality, values and ethics (honesty, integrity, compassion, justice, etc.) are taught. Students attend age appropriate chapels each week. The school is open to non-Christian students but with the clear understanding of expected standards of conduct and behavior.

STUDENTS: Students range in age from 5 through 16: Kindergarten through Grade 10. The school’s intent is to have a diverse student body with a strong mix of cultures and races. The current enrolment of approximately 190 students comes from 16 countries. Approximately 50% are American, 25% Kenyan, 15 % Korean with the remaining 10% coming from Australia, Britain, Canada, Ethiopia, Finland, Germany, Holland, Honduras, Japan, Russia, Rwanda, South Africa and Sudan.

FACULTY: There are 29 full-time and part-time staff members. The majority come from the United States, but others come from Australia, Britain, Canada, Kenya, and New Zealand. The teaching staff has been trained and certified, meeting the criteria established by the accrediting institutions in their home countries. Many come with advanced degrees.

CURRICULUM: WNS uses a standard North American curriculum and standardized testing is administered to all grades every year. WNS is committed to meeting individual needs of students, subject to the availability of staff and facilities. English as a Second Language (ESL), Special Education and tutorial programs are provided for students as necessary.

CORE SUBJECTS: The integrated Language Arts program develops reading, writing, grammar, speaking, listening, spelling and critical thinking skills. Math is taught using manipulative and focuses on problem solving. WNS offers systematic Bible teaching, with character development as the desired outcome. Teachers seek to make Biblical truth relevant to the children’s lives. WNS has developed its own curriculum in Social Studies based on the international nature of the school and the experiences of the students as residents in Kenya. Science is a discovery-based program.

SPECIAL SUBJECTS: WNS has specialized staff in the areas of Music, Physical Education, Library, Art, Life Skills, Community Development, Computers, and After School Sports. Band is offered to students in grades 4 through 8. Two highlights of the music department are the Christmas and Easter choral and band programs.
