The Geneva English School is a private, non-profit-making primary school. It is owned
and managed by the GENEVA ENGLISH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION, composed of parents
whose children attend the School.

The Geneva English School was founded in April 1961 by a group of parents who were
seeking primary education for their children based on the British curriculum, thereby
avoiding disruption in their children's education when they returned to the United Kingdom.
From a school which originally started in a church hall with eight children from 5 to 7 years of
age, the Geneva English School has now grown to one hundred and seventy pupils aged from
four to eleven years of age. In 1989 the School moved to Genthod, a village on the north shore
of the Lake Geneva, six kilometres from the centre of the city, where it had acquired a
magnificent 'maison de maître' situated in a large country estate of 30'000 square metres.

The original building, which was constructed in 1845, now houses several of the classrooms,
the library, 'specialist' rooms for the teaching of French, the Learning Support area, and the administration.

A purpose-built classroom block and an impressive gymnasium have been added and the
school is surrounded by spacious playing fields and playgrounds with excellent parking facilities.The over-all direction of the School has been delegated to an elected Management Committee
of members of the Association. The Headmaster also serves as a member of the Management
Committee, as well as acting as the School’s full-time executive answering to the Committee.
The Committee holds meetings regularly and works closely with the Headmaster to ensure the
sound running and development of the School. General Meetings of the Association are held at
least twice a year and meetings between parents and teachers take place each term.General

The school has seven classes including the Preparatory Class.
The teaching staff consists of eleven experienced, fully qualified,
British teachers, supplemented by five part-time French teachers.
A Learning Support specialist gives extra help to those children in need of it. The younger children enjoy the help and assistance of both French-speaking and English-speaking assistants.

Each pupil receives an end-of-term report outlining the progress which has been made both in and out of the classroom.

The School bases its programme on the primary school curriculum, state or independent, in Britain and prepares pupils fully for secondary education.

Careful attention is paid to all the relevant aspects of the National Curriculum. A high standard of work is expected and achieved to prepare the majority of children for either independent or state schools in Britain or the Foundation of the International School in Geneva. Others complete their education in international schools, Swiss and French schools and schools in the United States.

The School keeps abreast of developments in the teaching world, particularly on British educational matters, and adopts those innovations likely to benefit the children and the evolution and development of the School. With this in mind, teachers are encouraged to attend regular courses and seminars both locally and in the United Kingdom.

Close contacts are maintained with the independent schools in the United Kingdom and the School is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools as well as the International Schools Association.The Geneva English School aims through its curriculum to develop basic skills and build up knowledge, to stimulate a child's capacity to think, to draw out the full potential of a child in all aspects, and
to cater for moral, social, emotional, aesthetic and physical
development.

It is obvious that literacy and numeracy are of prime concern and great emphasis is placed upon these vital aspects of the curriculum.Great attention is paid to English work in all its varied dimensions; speech, listening, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, poetry, literature and drama. An excellent library is available.
