English schools in Europe
The British School of Madeira opened in September 1980. It is the only international bilingual Portuguese-English school in the Island which is officially recognised by the Regional Educational Authority of Madeira.
We are proud of our record and of the traditions we have created. In September 2006 we moved into our new installations in Caminho dos Saltos, Funchal. We now have the ideal facilities and conditions for a 21st century school.
The British School of Madeira is a truly international school in terms of its pupil population – 50% Portuguese and at least 16 other different nationalities.
The School caters for pupils from 3 to 15 years of age and follows the British (Scottish) curriculum in combination with official Portuguese programmes. It is bilingual in that pupils are taught to read, write, speak and understand both English and Portuguese to a bilingual level. Class sizes are small and there is great emphasis on individual attention.
