The Top Vacation Spots in Italy
By:Ling Tong

What you feel are the top vacation spots in Italy depends on what you are looking for in a vacation. Each region of the country has different attractions and different ways for you to spend your time. You may want to visit the large cities of Rome, Florence or Venice or you may prefer a location where you can soak up on the sun on a sandy beach.

The Acosta Valley is one region where you can see the Alps in all their splendour. It is surrounded by the best peaks and is the location of a spectacular national park, Gran Paridisio, where you can see all kinds of animals and birds, such as ibex, chamois and eagles. In the capital city of this region, Acosta, there are traces of early periods in Roman history in the walls, Augustus Arch and the Pretorian Gate. The Romanesque Cathedral dates back to medieval times. Take a tour of the fortified castles in the valley, some of which contain local history museums. In winter this area is the premier skiing district of the country.

In the Piedmont region, you have to spend time in Turin and Susa. The Royal Armoury in Turin is one of the richest in Europe and the Egyptian Museum is the second most important museum of its kind in the world outside of Cairo. See the works of Renaissance painters at the Borgogna Museum in Vercelli. This area is part of the Leopontine Alps where you can engage in climbing and skiing.

Alto Adige is the Italian region where you can truly visit more castles than anywhere else in the country. Some of these castles have been transformed into hotels, which will give you a vacation with a difference. If you like walking then you will be in heaven in this region with the numerous natural walks that are available.

Milan is one of the cities in the Lombardia region. This area is the cradle of Romanesque architecture and every city has exciting architectural styles. Here you will find the splendid palaces and cathedrals built during the Italian Renaissance. You cannot miss the opportunity to visit the impressive Cathedral of Milan, which is actually an example of Gothic architecture.

If ancient history is what you crave, then you must head to the island of Sardinia for the best vacation experiences. Here you will find traces of ancient cultures and some of the most beautiful seascapes in the Mediterranean. Visit the Tombs of the Giants, the houses of the witches and see the nuraghi, the fortified dwellings of the early inhabitants hewn out of the cliffs. Lie on the beach and work on your tan and take delightful walks into the countryside.

Sicily has been voted one of the best Italian vacation destinations. This island is the largest in the Mediterranean and has a variety of landscapes for you to enjoy mountain peaks, villages that seem to grow out of the hillsides, sandy beaches and level plains. See the most active volcano in Europe when you visit Etna and see the traces of the Hellenistic age in the ruins and archaeological excavations. The majestic monuments in the Valle dei Templi of Agrigento is certainly one stop you should have on your itinerary.
