Dear Director/Recruiter,

For the past seventeen years, I have used my academic pedigree [doctoral degree in Modern History from the University of Oxford, UK] as the foundation on which I have developed history classes on both North American coasts that are energetic, engaging, entertaining, informative, and skill-based. After completing the Oxford Seminars certification program, I now intend to apply this experience, skill, and energy to the development of ESL classes in Asia, Latin America, or Europe. Though I think that my experience, personality, and commitment are well suited to teaching high school and college level students, my teaching style can be easily adapted to both older and younger groups, too.

Two main experiences have shaped my teaching philosophy. First, after seventeen years teaching at both the secondary and tertiary levels, I have developed a teaching style that engages and informs students, regardless of the topic. Second, my stand against the apartheid regime in my native South Africa enables me to relate with conviction and integrity to students, whom, I suspect, are seeking more than just sound academic instruction. Consequently, as a mature teacher with international experience I am able to educate, advise, nurture, and lead students of all backgrounds.

These influences and qualities have enabled me to develop realistic and effective goals for teaching English as a second or foreign language. Essentially, I create an environment in which all students feel safe to explore without fear of ridicule and with a growing confidence that fluency and accuracy in English can be attained. Though I design student-centric group activities with the aim of encouraging students to participate as much as possible in every class, I do intervene, when absolutely necessary, to ensure that the learning potential of all students, from weakest to strongest, is fully realized.

Should you require information that is not included on the resume or in this cover letter, please contact me at your convenience and I shall do my best to accommodate your inquiry. Thank you for reading my material and for considering me for the position.

Sincerely,

Michael Yoss
