Learning a new language, like English, may seem like a daunting task. Taking classes is time-consuming and often quite cost-prohibitive. There are several tools that you can access online to help you, but this process can be time-consuming as well. By incorporating English into your everyday routine and engaging in total immersion activities, not only will you learn the language quickly, it will not seem like so much work.

Materials You Use Daily

Watch movies with the English subtitles on. Watch one that you have seen several times. Seeing the words aids in visualizing the way sentences are structured. Train your ear in identifying new words and bolstering your vocabulary.

Listen to music, especially songs you know in your mother tongue. Look up the lyrics sheet online and use the lyrics to study new words and practice pronunciation.

Read newspapers, journals, books and magazines in English. Use a dictionary to look up any unfamiliar words. Identify words that you may not know about a particular subject. Reading English out loud for at least 15 to 20 minutes a day will aid significantly in your quest to learn English. Get a tutor to discuss these articles in English.

Total Immersion

Arrange to live or visit with a friend or relative who speaks English in his home, even if you can only stay one weekend. Forcing yourself to use your language skills will help your confidence in speaking.

Frequent establishments where you know English is spoken. Restaurants, schools, airports, bus stations or stores are a few good examples. Gain confidence in speaking and using your skills. There are always people looking to practice their English.

Make a pact with a friend who wants to learn English as well. Agree that you will only speak English to each other. Discuss beforehand whether you prefer to be corrected on grammar or vocabulary in your own language or in English. Use a theme for each meeting, like discussing a book you have read or a movie you have seen.

The more you engage in these two activities, the easier you will find it is to learn English.
