Learning a second language can be tough, especially if that language is English. The professionals at the website ESL Teachers Board speculate that this difficulty comes from English's mixed status -- that is, words from many languages were adapted into English, leaving no simple spelling and pronunciation rules. Students of English have many options open to them, though, so the study of this difficult language can be tailored to fit individual needs.

Online Study
Websites devoted solely to English learners are available for every level of study. Many are free and allow students to work at their own pace. Online learning centers charge a fee, but provide a more rigorous atmosphere along with access to a teacher. These centers often require an audio connection, which deepens the learning experience by adding speaking skills along with reading and grammar.

Private Tutoring
A tutoring session can be tailored to fit exactly the needs of the learner. Tutors begin English lessons at the student's level, then continue at an appropriate pace. This personal touch can get students excited about the language even when the learning is difficult. Check community bulletin boards or try an Internet search in order to find a private tutor. Ask how much they charge and what type of training they have had. Students usually know when the right tutor comes along, because the two "click" together.

Community Organizations
Students who must learn English to cope with the working or social world in the United States can apply to community organizations whose goal is to promote literacy. Because these organizations usually operate on donations and grants, they do not charge for their services. Most conduct assessments to determine who is eligible, and students will have to make room in their schedules for the class times offered.

Community College
Community colleges offer English as a Second Language programs that can be used as a stepping stone into courses taught in English. ESL programs will offer more types of classes than a private tutor or community organization and will require a certain level of schooling for admission, which varies. A community college might also have clubs and organizations for English learners to connect with each other and practice speaking.

Self-Study
Time and budget constraints can make joining a class difficult. However, English can still be studied successfully with a little discipline. Set aside time every day to listen, read and speak in English. Make friends who speak English, borrow English CDs and DVDs, read books or the newspaper in English or start an English journal. When a student takes time out every day for study and immersion, positive results will follow.
