In fact, there are as many ways to learn English, as there are people that want to learn the language --- there is no one size fits all best approach. However, there are a few tried and true methods that help many people out as the learn English as a second language:

1. Get yourself involved with the language whenever you are given the chance

Learning English as a foreigner and living in a country with another primary language is not the easiest. Take advantage of opportunities to get involved with English whenever you get the chance, such as listening to singers, watch movies with their original soundtrack, and if possible get the English subtitles as well. Also, read as many English publications as you can find, listen to videos on the internet, etc.

2. Communicate as often as you can with English speakers

If you happen to have the opportunity to join in a club or organization where English speakers attend, engage yourself in conversations with them. In this way you can ask questions whenever something is not clear to you and get a good knowledgeable answer. Alternatively, if you know a group of other people trying to learn English, speak the language with them!

3. Try to practice every day, even if it's only for a short period of time.

Every day you should practice the language, even if it is for 10 minutes. Small doses of English practice are better than no doses at all. This can be achieved through various methods - listening to the news, talk shows, listening to the music on your radio and so on. Chatting in English with a second person whether he is or not a native English speaker is again of great use.

4. Go deep into the English culture

This doesn't mean that you need to start reading all the English writers in their native language, but you can develop the taste for several aspects that relate to English culture, such as learning how to play cricket, learning the rules for baseball, what are the specific kinds of foods for various regions across USA, UK or Canada. Through this context you can learn English in a more diversified, and often fun, way.

5. Do not focus on only one learning methodology.

As presented above, it is better to focus on several methods for learning the English language. Some textbook learning, mixed with practice conversations, mixed with watching English movies, etc helps keep students motivated and learning efficiently.
