Learning a language in a new country is challenging and can be intimidating. Living in America means being immersed in an English-speaking culture, and living in a country accepting of other cultures. America's immigrants speak many different languages, and teaching English to foreign speakers has become an American responsibility.

Search your local high school or nonprofit agencies for English classes. Many local school districts support night classes for foreign language speakers, and if classes are not available through the school, officials at the school are likely to know where classes can be found. Catholic Charities is one nonprofit organization helping non-English speakers find classes to learn basic American English.

Buy books for children written in English. These books hold the simplest vocabulary and are geared toward beginners in language skills. Reading books for children will improve your mastery of the written word while you learn spelling and basic vocabulary.

Buy mixed music compact discs that have English lyrics. Listening to music is a calming way to learn a second language, because listeners hear the words differently than in normal conversation. Simple lyrics, such as songs for children or tweens, are the easiest to interpret. Local radio stations will have lists of popular simple songs to help English learners.
