In order to obtain permanent residency status in England as a foreign visitor, student, temporary worker, or other immigrant, you must be able to speak English with relative fluency. For adults new to the language, English can be a very difficult language to acquire. However, there are some programs and immersion techniques that can help you learn it faster and more accurately. Read on to find out more about learning English as a second language and how that will help you work in England.

Apply for a university or college course in England, if you are not already attending one. It is the quickest way to get admitted to the country. You will be allowed to work part-time while you attend university, and you will be surrounded by English speakers. The best way to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in it fully---studying in England will allow you to do that.

Purchase a copy of some language learning software. Rosetta Stone is the best known and commonly hailed as the most effective software, but it comes with a high price tag. Look in your local bookstore for other language-learning options. Any software that will teach you pictorially---that is, by using pictures to demonstrate word meaning---will be just as effective. Children below the age of 6 learn language faster than adults, and they do so via pictorial learning. Software that imitates this learning process for adults teaches you faster.

Immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. If you have an English-speaking friend, have him join you for dinner once a week, at which you both agree to converse only in English. Watch English movies and television, listen to English radio programs, and read English books. Don't be afraid to practice speaking the language. Even if you don't get the pronunciation right at first, most English speakers will correct you and help you say each word correctly. The only way to speak with confidence is through practice.

Take online quizzes to track your practice. There are many online forums where English-learners can join to discuss their progress in the language. If you purchase language-learning software, the packet may even include links to websites that will further your education. Talk to as many English speakers online as you can to practice English spelling, which is irregular and may be hard to grasp.

Listen to native speakers. Non-native English speakers make great instructors in English as a second language---they have gone through what you're going through now---but native speakers have a natural flow to their language that non-native speakers will find very hard to acquire. Imitate native speakers' pronunciations and speech patterns, and your English will sound much more fluent.

Take a lot of grammar and vocabulary tests. Assign yourself a list of words to learn each week. Study the grammatical rules that govern English to really master the language.
