4. Start with a preposition (word that tell you where something is eg.
Under, near, over)
Near the gate, the dog lurked with the postman's leg in his sights.
5. Put the subject (the noun 'doing' the main verb) halfway through the
sentence
At the top of the stairs, Tom waited.
6. Reorder the clauses within a sentence
.
On the landing, at the top of the stairs, Tom waited. A t the
top of the stairs, on the landing, Tom waited.
7. Embed a subordinate clause inside the main clause, dropping it in as a
bracketed 'aside' into the middle of a sentence.

Fluffy, who was excessively greedy, eyed the other cat's dinner with envy.
8. Start with a connecting adverb (eg, therefore, finally, later etc.)
9. Hide the subject of the sentence to create tension.
Waiting, half hidden in the darkness, was the mugger.
10. Start with anything other than a noun or a pronoun!
