Word lists are lists of words that have something in common. You can find those in vocabulary websites or in books. Here are some examples: a list of common English nouns, a list of action verbs, a list of color names, etc. These can be quite useful. Keep on reading to find out how vocabulary lists can help YOU.

1. Make up example sentences with each word on the list.

Just reading or memorizing is not enough, at least in most cases. But when you use the new words in sentences of your own, it can really take you one giant step forward. Give it a try, and see for yourself.

2. Use the words in a story you make up.

Take your list of words and write a short story that contains all of these words. The story doesn't even have to make much sense. Even better - make it ridicules! This can actually be fun.

Here's a short example. Let's say you are studying these new actions verbs: answer, argue, bake, break, buy.

You can write a short story such as this: "Lisa was baking a cake. Suddenly, her brother Joe showed up and started arguing with her. Lisa refused to answer, so he began breaking the dishes. Fortunately for Lisa, their parents got home, and now Joe has to buy a new set of dishes..."

3. Write the words on flashcards and practice daily.

Flashcards are special cards you use to memorize data. They are a good tool to use while learning a new language. The bonus in using flashcards is that you can make a game out of it.

4. Practice dictations to memorize spelling.

Make a dictation. Yes, you can do it by yourself. Simply follow this procedure:

Write all the words (preferably not more than ten at once) on a piece of paper in two columns: one for English, and one for the translation in your own language.

Now, fold the paper so that you will only see the translation in your language.

Then, take an additional piece of paper and write down the English words that correspond to the translated words. Don't look at the answers! The point is remembering by heart.

When finished, compare the English words you have just written to the ones on the original paper.

At first, you might not do so well. But trust me, after a few rounds you won't believe how much you improved!

A word of warning though: don't invest much time in dictations. Just like flashcards, they work on simple memorization, rather than understanding. Therefore they should be used as a supplemental exercise, and not as the main one. If you don't practice using those words later on, you can definitely forget them in the future.

5. Practice the words in a conversation with a friend.

What are good friends for? Grab a friend, explain him or her what you need, and start practicing! Make a conversation, and try to include as much words as possible. The conversation doesn't always have to make sense. Actually, sometimes it is more fun if it doesn't... The important thing is that you improve your vocabulary and have some good laughs on the way!
