What does it take to speak English? To be more precise, what does it take to speak good English? Well, if you were expecting answers like "Enroll for a crash course in English" or "Get back to school" or "Hire an English Tutor", you are in for a surprise. It's surprisingly easy for anybody to learn to speak English. But like everything else, it always takes a little effort from you. Let's look at a few things that we can do in our everyday lives to help us achieve this goal - speak English like a pro!

Learn small sentences and phrases first: I always look at my 8-year old son and cannot help wondering how easily he picks up a new language. This is what I noticed - he picks up the smaller sentences and phrases first and never hesitates to actually speak them. If, for some reason, he gets stuck trying to say something he always gets help from his friends because, by this time they get the idea about what he is trying to convey to them. And, the result is this - my son gets wiser by one more "big sentence". So, when children can do it with relative ease, I'm sure we, as adults, can do better!

Read whenever you can: A good way to learn how to speak English is to read a good newspaper, magazine or just about anything you can lay your hands on (as long as it is in English). Reading gives you a good idea about how to construct good sentences and how to convey what you want to say to another person, in a manner that is easy for him to understand. When you read, it helps you imagine what the writer is trying to convey to his readers. It will also help you when you try to convey something to your audience. A good way to start would be to read in a way that you are most comfortable with. Are you one of those people who read out as loudly as possible or just one of those people who "read in their minds"? Doesn't really matter - you just go ahead and read in the way you like it! Remember, any place is a good place to read. You can read while you are travelling to work, when you are having your morning coffee or just before you go to bed! Why, you can even read in the loo!

Watch a lot of English movies: A seriously fun way of learning to speak English is to watch movies! Watch a lot of them and as much as you can! While watching English movies at home, enable the subtitles. When you are watching a movie, you can actually get to learn how people speak English in their day-to-day lives. Not only that, you also learn the expressions that go with the sentences or phrases. Let's take an example - when somebody greets another person with a "Hi" or "Hello" it is always done with a smile. If you hear something that you would like to learn, try to say it after them and try to say it in the correct manner.

It doesn't cost anything to try to speak English. The more you try, the better you get. It's as easy as that!

Learning to speak English fluently does not necessarily imply enrolling for a crash course or hiring an English tutor. There are certain guidelines or basic tips that you may follow to learn to speak English in quick time. Moreover, this do-it-yourself approach to learning comes free of cost.
