What would you do if "IT" went away today? What is "IT?" The "IT" I am referring to is your career. You get up every morning excited, looking forward to the challenges and opportunities the day will bring. appointments, emails, your inner circle of career related colleagues.... Oh yes, it is a lifestyle that you have chosen to live!

Would you know what to do next? Is there some other career field that you would make a mad dash for? Are you so firmly entrenched in your career that you would be devastated? Let us hope not. In the larger context of things (yes, there are things much larger), what if the "IT" were your God and family, your friends, your home? That should change our perspective, at least a little, right?

I read numerous stories lamenting the hours, the sacrifices, the lack of respect for the work performed, the worries of competing with others for all the success achieved. Yes, we do worry about such things. But, have our priorities gotten a little out of order? What matters most to you? Is it the success (i.e. $$$$), the professional achievement, the recognition by your peers, the luxuries the world has to offer?

I urge you to take the time, at least a little, to reassess your attitude toward your career? Compare it and its byproducts to the things that matter most in your life, whatever they may be. When we get up in the morning and feel a little anxious or excited, examine if that excitement includes the things that matter most. Just a point to ponder. It is not what we do but rather why we do it!
