Redundancy Advice - 5 Options If You've Been Made Redundant
By:Chris Norton

5 Possible Options Following Redundancy

Get a New Job – The internet has made it easier than ever to find the perfect job. There are specialist job boards for every conceivable industry sector in worldwide locations. Whether you are looking to a similar job to the one you just lost or are thinking of a change, it won’t take long to track down many suitable vacancies. Redundancy is now so common that it isn’t seen as a disadvantage by employers like it might have been a few years ago. So dust-off your old CV and give it a bit of a refresh before pointing it in the direction of a great new employer.

Take a Break – Being made redundant is the perfect opportunity to consider taking a career break. Whether it’s a round the world trip or just a bit of DIY that you’ve been putting off, your redundancy has given you the perfect excuse. Holidays have never been cheaper so if there is a far flung corner of the globe you’ve always wanted to visit now might be the ideal time to do so. Give your globe a bit of a spin and fire up the cheap holiday websites and see what you can find.

Take your ex-Employer to Court – it’s an unpleasant truth but many redundancies aren’t above board. If you think that your redundancy wasn’t legitimate it’s important to approach an employment law solicitor as soon as possible. They’ll be able to advise you whether you have the legal right to challenge your former employer. Fortunately, If you think you might have been made redundant illegally, there are lots of resources online with guidance on what is and isn’t legal.

Spend the Settlement – the law guarantees, in many cases, that redundancy comes with a compensation cheque. If you’ve served the company for a long time this often can accumulate to quite a significant total. Of course suddenly securing a lump sum can have all kinds of benefits. Whether it’s a treat like a new car, holiday or something more practical like clearing existing debts and credit card bills, funds from being made redundant can open many new doors.

Start your own Business – being made redundant gives you the perfect opportunity to set up your own company. While being self employed is far from easy, it does give you a chance to be your own boss. Being in charge of your own employment can be both liberating and stressful but if you have had a great idea for a company your redundancy might be the little push that encourages you to give it a go.
