Career Change From Employee to Business Owner and Afraid to Sell? 7 Mistaken Beliefs Around Selling
By:Christina Carpentier

It seems to be a common "theme" that many entrepreneurs have great ideas for their businesses and love "creating" their businesses, but when it comes to "selling" their business' services, their products or themselves, they get stuck. "Knee deep in shift,"â„¢ as I call it. All sort of "issues", pertaining to "fear" and perhaps some biased mistaken beliefs about what "selling is", bring these new business owners to a screeching halt!

As a person who has over 20 years experience in Sales and Marketing, I tend to not "get" what all the fear is about. Perhaps it is because I have a different belief around "selling" and people who "sell". I am willing to wager that many of these mistaken beliefs have been caused by some unprofessional "Sales People" that these new business owners have experienced.

7 Common Mistaken Beliefs around selling:

All Sales People are "con-artists".

Not true, con-artists are con-artists who con people by selling in unscrupulous ways and abuse and make victims out of their naïve or gullible customers.

All Sales People are "pushy".

Not true, only those who are lacking in "professional" sales skills and training or are desperate in some way.

All Sales People are just going after the "sale" and do not care about their customers.

Not true, while many sales people like making sales, the successful ones show that they do care about their customers, otherwise they would not get any recurring sales or referrals.

All Sales People are "money hungry."

Not true, while some sales people can make a lot of money, and some are motivated by money, the successful ones care more about building relationships and serving their customers than the money, because they know the money will follow if they take care of their customers.

All Sales People are "obnoxious and annoying".

Not true, once again, these people who are annoying to you are those who are lacking in sales skills and need to learn a few things about selling successfully.

All Sales People are "dishonest."

Not true, the con-artists are dishonest. Professional Sales people are not dishonest, because if they were, they would not earn referrals or recurring business from their customers.

All Sales People are "ruthless."

Not true, while there are ruthless people out their trying to make sales, they tend to not be the professional sales people. They are "desperados" who are usually in dire straights financially and appear to be ruthless, but usually are motivated by fear for survival.

So, there you have it. These mistaken beliefs seem to be just a few of the common ones that cause people to not want to "sell" or be associated with selling or sales people in any way! These mistaken beliefs that I have heard from many people are truly "cover ups" for those who have fear about putting on the "sales hat" and "selling" their products or services.

While many of us have had experience with some sales people who have seemed to have these "traits"...just like any profession, there are quality "professionals" and there are those who are unable to demonstrate what is viewed as "quality" and "professionalism". Some of these "sales people" may have been truly inexperienced novices i.e. lacking in skills, good training or experience... or they may truly have been "desperate" for a paycheck, if they were "commission based", or if their company used "motivation by fear" tactics with their sales people. They also may have been fearful of losing their job!

What if we shift your perspective on this whole "fear of selling" thing and come from a place of deep knowing, that what we have to offer is our "gift" to the world. All of us have special and unique talents and there is nobody on this planet like us "individually". What we have to offer has tremendous value. If we do not go out and share our passion for "who we are" as entrepreneurs, who have created a business with a "grand purpose", then we are cheating ourselves and everyone else who is missing out on what we have to offer! Touching other people's lives is so worthwhile.

So, instead of getting all caught up in the past, with some bad experiences of people who were "lacking in their sales skills and training" and who may have been "desperate" or maybe who were real "con-artists" just make a shift and a commitment to yourself, that you will not show up as one of those poor people. Remember, what we put out comes back to us (universal law of attraction).

Please try to forgive these poor souls, bless them for their "issues" and let your issues with them go. You are not them, are you? (and...if you are, all the more reason for you to shift!)

Your business, your talents, your gifts, that you have come to share on this earth, have nothing whatsoever to do with these people, who have left such a bad feeling within you!

If you come from a place of knowing who you are and what you have to offer, just share your passion authentically... then people will respond in a positive way!

That is TRUE SELLING! That is why I have always loved selling. There is a quote out there that says, "Sales is 90% Enthusiasm and 10% skill!" That is so true, if you love what you are selling, you are passionate about it and really believe in it it is easy to want to "share it" with others. That is what true selling is all about...passion, enthusiasm! That has always been my experience and I have been very successful in sales!

If you have enthusiasm about your business, service or products, then go to it! Get over all those others who turned you off! You are not them!

Share your passion. Believe in yourself. The sales results will follow!
