Changing Careers During The Holidays
By:Annemarie Segaric

We're getting into the busy holiday season and the time of year when you'll hear people say it's hard to find a job or change careers.

Is it really true?

Yes... and no.

Yes, it's a busy time. People are preoccupied with dinners, parties, shopping, and vacation. But as a job seeker, you can take advantage of something this time of year. While your career changing counterparts are "waiting until January" to pursue leads and apply for jobs, you can be out there pounding the pavement.

With some of the competition out of the way, you will stand out from the crowd as you reach out to perspective employers, schedule informational interviews, and follow up on leads.

Yes, it might be a little harder to reach people, but don't let that be an excuse. Be persistent! Don't just assume that no one is available in November or December. People are still working. Offices are open. Be different than your peers and act as if it's the best time of year to find a job.

My own husband found his current job two weeks before Christmas. They wanted him to start right away and he did.

Here are some great things to do over the next couple of weeks:

1. E-mail people you've been meaning to network with. Set up plans to meet, even if you're not meeting until after January 1st.

2. Rework your resume and have an expert offer advice.

3. Follow up on jobs you've applied for but have not heard back on.

4. Make requests for informational interviews. Again, these meetings may not happen until January but you'll be on their calendars.

5. Sign up for classes, workshops, and other training you will need to make your career change happen.

Also, remember to take advantage of holiday events you attend. Make an effort to strike up conversations with people you may not know. Don't be shy about discussing your career change plans. You won't be a party bore as long as you keep it light and remember to have fun!
