Unemployed? How to Make the Most of It
By:Tony Jacowski

We all need a break from our job routines and the opportunity to explore other career options. If you are currently out of a job or planning take a break, read further to know how you can make the best of this time out.

Self Assessment

Utilize this time off for self-assessment. Determine where you want to go from now and choose a career path. Understand your strong and weak points and try to make the most of your strengths.

A SWOT analysis is helpful in doing this. Take this time to realize how much you have already achieved, and how can you use it in your next job.

Consider a Change

We all desire to land jobs of our choice; however, it isn't always possible to get what we want. Now is the time to consider the dream occupation that you might have been thinking of for a long time. Explore options and determine what you must do to qualify and what the new job might offer you.

Once you have taken a close look at its negatives and positives, you can prepare yourself and start applying to potential employers.

Get Motivated To Study Further

If you don't have a college degree, now would be a good time to work on one. Look for universities or schools that offer the degree that you desire. It is always beneficial to acquire new skills and improve old ones to survive in a highly competitive market.

A degree can open new avenues and better job opportunities. Studying during your unemployment period will prove a great advantage; employers will be impressed with the way you have used this time.

If the new training or degree requires many months, you can look for a part time job to keep you going for that period of time.

Start Networking

Networking helps in many ways. Make use of your contacts to look for career-change opportunities. Let your circle know what you are looking for; you never know - they might help you find exactly the right job. Friends, associates and family members can help you; don't forget to let them know what's going on.

Be aware of opportunities that might come up in the classifieds. Make a note of all potential employers and the openings and apply to the ones that will give you a chance to develop your career in the direction you want to go.

Update Your Resume

After your period of unemployment, remember to update your resume with the new skills and degrees that you gained during that period. Keep your applications and cover letters ready to send to employers.

Many people blame circumstances beyond their control for their unemployment and let time pass by mourning over it. Don't let this happen to you - use this period wisely to prepare yourself for your next career opportunity.
