Employment Tips

Protecting Yourself As an Employee
By:Joseph Devine

If ever you decide to work for a company, it is important that you trust and believe in the work, goals and vision of the company. The existence of trust in your relationship with both your boss and your coworkers is the first step in finding the key to a satisfying work life.

However, you should always be aware of your surroundings and make sure that you look out for yourself. In the post Enron world, a heightened sense of awareness is all too important. Money can become a powerful force, positively and negatively, in the presence of any human being. It most depends on who is doing the managing.

There are some things that you can do to ensure that you at least have your back covered. Here are just a few:

1. Get Everything in Writing

America has become a very litigious society. Lawsuits have become more about business these days than a determination of right from wrong. If your heart is in the right place though, you should get everything in writing. Writing is the surest form of communication. Especially since the content in a written document cannot be disputed. Thus, writing the best form of legal protection that you can have.

2. Always Follow Company Policy

Chances are that company policy is there for a reason. You don't ever want to find yourself disobeying company policy, even if it is your boss who is telling you to disobey the rules. It is always important to remember in these circumstances that every adult is responsible for his or her own actions. The court will try you as such.

3. Be proactive, Work hard and diligently

This element just gets rid of the potential to incur more problems. If you work hard and diligently at your job, then no one will be able to criticize you for not putting in the work ethic. It is a testament to your character that will last much longer than you might imagine.

4. Do not put all of your eggs in one basket

Try not to rely solely on your job for financial security. If this happens, you will find yourself in great psychological stress over time. Start looking at ways to generate income from other places. This way, if your company goes south, or a new policy is introduced that you do not agree with, you won't have trouble leaving.
