Employment Tips

Tips on Being a Great Boss
By:Blake Ryan

The job of a boss is not always easy. There are many things to keep in mind, and to monitor, when you are in charge of a group of employees. Few bosses want to be labeled as bad bosses. By keeping some important tips in mind, you can ensure that your employees rave about their well-respected boss.

Check Performance and Influence Behavior
According to the corporate leadership organization Three Star Leadership, a great boss checks on work performance to always know how employees are working and how accurately work is getting done. It's important to check on performance more often among those employees who are new or who are learning a new task. Use everything you say or do to influence those around you. Keep everyone on their most professional behavior and keep work performance up to par.

Expectations and Feedback
Expectations are an important part of any workplace. According to Three Star Leadership, a great boss needs to set clear and reasonable expectations. Telling employees how to do things is one thing, but you must be clear about that or they might not know how you want things done. Offer feedback on work and performance, as well as behavior if employees do something wrong or contrary to company policy. While feedback is important, seeking suggestions from employees shows that you are not stuck in only your own ideas. Offer respect: When employees are frustrated and come to the boss with issues, a great boss will listen, be receptive and work hard to make the situation better, if possible.

Keep Interest; Praise and Discipline Employees
Employees must be interested in their work to do a good job. A great boss helps employees continue to learn and develop in their jobs by making sure the job stays interesting for them, according to Three Star leadership. Offering praise encourages employees to continue through work tasks that may be frustrating or seem too difficult to complete. The same goes for correcting negative behavior. Disciplining employees for certain behaviors encourages them to avoid doing this behavior in the future. A great boss will be understanding of personal issues that arise among employees, such as family problems or financial stresses. Maintaining a good sense of humor also makes for a great boss as long as it does not take away from work performance.

Attendance, Motivation, and Energy
Attendance is key to becoming a great boss. Every time you show up to work, you get to know your employees a little better, and every minute you are at the workplace is an opportunity to help your employees grow with encouragement and counsel. According to the business insight organization CEO Refresher, employees model behaviors they see in their bosses, and great bosses motivate and energize employees.

Ability to Make Difficult Decisions
Being a great boss comes with an array of difficulties, one of which is terminating employees. If there is no positive effort coming from an employee, the decision to terminate may be the best decision so other employees can keep moving in a good direction. According to CEO Refresher, a boss who can terminate, with dignity, employees who are not offering anything positive to the workplace is a great boss.
