Employment Tips

Is there a generation that has never had a job?
By:Bethany Winston <bethanywinston09@gmail.com>

The statistics for unemployment is on a steady rise. With financial crises hitting the world one after another, the employment status of people has taken a big hit. Uncertainty looms everywhere and you may often wonder as to where all the monies of the world are going to?

The Department for Work and Pensions in the United Kingdom came up with statistics that revealed that about 1.4 million people in the UK, who are receiving welfare and benefits, have never worked all their life. And that statistic pumped up articles on the ‘laziness’ of a people that seem to shamelessly receive welfare, contributing nothing positive to the society. And this is where there is loss in value-creation, they argue.

That seems like a pretty weak argument in the face of thousands losing jobs in the public sector and economic crises hitting the world with a frequency and devastation that is only matched by the furious tsunamis and hurricanes! What about CEOs, bosses and politicians who have seen a super rise in financial fortunes? Does it mean that the work they do is more valuable than the combined work of thousands under them? Where will the top of the pyramid be if not for the bottom?

Statistics depend on who interprets them and how they interpret them. The fact that 1.4 million people in the UK have never worked all their lives only shows how hard it has been to get a job. And the number of people who seek to live on support shows how less the take-home salaries are. The statistics of the Department for Work and Pensions gets new light when seen along with the fact that 841,000 households are jobless because of sickness, injuries and disabilities and 300,000 households are workless because they are caring and taking care of the disabled!

600,000 young people between the ages 16 and 24 are neither in the education process nor are they working. This is the result of the employment wasteland that has been created by economic crises. Cutting on the benefits is a rude way to cut off sustenance for those that are already deprived. And those that seek to do it are those who have never been on welfare and benefits themselves! It’s like the polar bear speaking on the uselessness of an oasis in the desert.

It is no use playing the blame game. There can be no solution unless one wears the shoes of another. Everyone is equally at fault. Theoretically, if everyone thinks of the welfare of the other, how can anyone ever suffer? The root problem is neither of a lazy generation or a jobless generation. It is the effect of a selfish generation!

The world has enough resources to fulfill everyone’s needs. But it does not have enough to fulfill everyone’s wants. The solution exists in everyone consciously making sacrifices. Expecting only the ‘rich’ to make sacrifices is as unfair as expecting only the ‘poor’ to do the same. Sacrifice has to become a way of life - be it in money, be it in energy or be it in knowledge and expertise.
