Employment Tips

Job Seeker Trends for the 21st Century
By:Marsha Phillips

Attention all job seekers: have you noticed that job boards aren't seeing too much action these days? That's because recruiters and employers are choosing to post jobs online at sites like LinkedIn and Craigslist. Why? Simple: it's free to do so.

In addition to this, recruiters and employers have also become more tech-savvy at social networking. The traditional résumé is still an important component to your job search, but it's no longer the first impression. Consider this: by the time a recruiter or employer sees your resume, they've probably already Googled you. Welcome to the digital age.

Social-Networking Sites

I have touched on this elsewhere on my blog, but it's worth repeating. If you don't have a profile on a social-networking site, you will need one. These sites have become the new hunting ground for job candidates. It's a plus for you as a job seeker because you can showcase your skills and experience - and if you're really bold, you can even set up an advertising page to sell your skills!

Job seekers can use social-networking sites to showcase their skills. For instance, LinkedIn, a professional networking site, allows users to build an online profile that includes resumes, a recommendation and references. It also provides applications. Facebook has "Professional Profile" which allows you to upload your résumé or import your LinkedIn profile and recommendations. Job seekers on Facebook can also set up an advertising page to sell their skills.

Smart Phones

In addition to this trend, the job search has now become mobile. Anyone who has a Smart phone such as iPhone, Android or BlackBerry, can access job postings while out and about. Because of this, job boards such as Indeed and Careerbuilder still have some usefulness. They now have mobile apps available that offer features to streamline your job search by using them to track job listings and create opportunities to network.

Blogs

Creating and sharing your own blog allows you to highlight your expertise in your chosen career field. You can provide analysis on trends or expand upon your skills listed in your traditional resume. Also, reading blogs from companies of interest can give insight into those companies' culture.

Conclusion

Employers and recruiters are looking for a virtual portfolio in 2011. This means that as a job seeker, having an online presence is a must. Utilize these online platforms to bring your job search into the 21st century! http://jobseekerbootcamp.wordpress.com
