Employment Tips

Music to Medicate Unemployment - 2
By:Martha M Murray

This is an update on the situation with our group of unemployed ladies from the first article Music to Medicate Unemployment. The ladies are learning a lot of new skills which includes learning to play an instrument. Some of them have even been going on more interviews which account for the positive state of mind among the others in the group. They are living in hope that our economy will make a sharp change for the better.

In the first article my sister and her co-workers found themselves out of a job when the corporation downsized due to the economy. After suffering the terrifying blow of being unemployed they decided to form a support group. The little group of five women drew strength from each other to find other avenues to make a living and to find ways to keep up their personal appearance to remain sane.

A few weeks after the group was formed they discovered a magical medication at a well-known spa to smooth the ills of a negative situation. During their visit the relaxing music in the background melted away their worry and frustration when they laid back and took of a healing medicine-music. The sound released tension and anxiety leaving the women exhilarated but relaxed.

The power and magic of music is one of the best cures for a frazzled mind. The soft notes of a well-played instrument can lift the spirit to overcome many negative situations. Music is the glue that holds together the scenes in movies during which actors and actresses play a part to entertain. We rely on music to relieve some of the most difficult times in our lives. Music is the sanity in a harsh economy where many are facing situations like unemployment for the first time.

All of the members are still using music as the medicine to medicate the situation. Two of them are learning how to play the piano by ear. We have a member that is finally taking hold of her dream of learning how to play the guitar. She wants to perform in a band one day life Joan Jet.

My sister and her former co-workers are still meeting each week to lend support and to pool resources. In the time since the first article was published our little support group has grown. Two former co-workers have joined the ranks. After losing their positions the two new members needed support and encouragement to deal with the stresses of being unemployed.

After the two new members had been in the group for a few weeks they started feeling more hopeful. Their self-esteem and confidence had taken a serious blow when they were given a pink slip. The constant battle going on in their heads were conquered by advice, support and understanding by the others who had experienced the same hardship.

Since some of the members are still looking for employment and going on interviews they visit the spa occasionally to keep themselves looking professional. When the spa had another special the two new members went for the first time. Although they were reluctant to spend extra money both agreed it was very important to keep up their appearance.

The spa visit did not affect the two new members the way it did the other five. They were still unhappy and struggling with changes at home. The calming effect of the music did not relax them because they refused to be calm. Nothing completely took away their feeling of resentment and rejection.

After each meeting the members went home with a better view of themselves. Meeting with others in the same situation did a lot to keep up their self-esteem. Each day and night the members made time to take their medicine. Playing the piano or guitar gave them the medication needed to endure. Listening to music gave the others the relaxation needed to stay positive.

By the time this article was finished two of the former members found full-time employment. Their success was celebrated by all of the members because the success of the two gave all of the others hope.
