Micro-Managing - Trashing People Instead of Building Them
By:Larry Icabandi Nabiong

Micro-managing is unproductive.

There is lack of trust, full of fear and none of so-called complete delegation of tasks which of course, brings more damage than good to the workplace.

Imagine yourself being assigned a task by your boss and you cannot do it independently; he/she always asking you every time you meet as if you feel incompetent in doing the assigned task.

Out of frustration, you begin to disengaged. You do not feel valued as a worker. You seem a square peg in a round hole or what.

Yes, without giving you all the details necessary to finish the task, and with his/her constant checking on your progress, you feel being watched over from the shoulder and now ready to flare up from micro-managing!

Here are then, the evils micro-managing can do to you and your workers:

Micro-managing does not give one a chance to flourish as a worker. It hinders one to observe creativity and resourcefulness by constantly letting the boss or manager have a say on everything the task is required of.

Micro-managing is the usual cause of misunderstanding between the manager and the worker. Yes, if the manager micro-manage, chances are, he/she insults the intelligence, creativity and the like of the worker. What if the worker is better-equipped than the manager?

Micro-managing cannot be used as a way of harassing workers by blaming them if tasked assigned is not done as scheduled, and putting the worker's reputation at stake simply by exposing his so-called incompetence where if fact the manager is the one to blame.

Micro-managing does not ensure one worker a smooth-sailing working relationship when each one is afraid to give other a chance to flaunt his skills sans fear of what the other would say later.

Micro-managing as seen in offices today boils down to inefficiency and ineffectiveness, thus wasting time, energy and the like both by the worker and the so-called manager.

So, if you want to trust your people without so-called micro-managing the change will be welcomed by workers knowing that through trust more productivity and the like will be a accomplish by them.

Always look at the bigger picture. When a worker flawed on his task, accept it as his investment to learning and encourage him/her to take more responsibilities without too much snooping on his skills and the like, thus giving him a leeway to improve and love learning, grow confidence and evolve as a leader like yourself.

Do not be afraid to be out-shined by them. Your light has been known before theirs arrived.
