ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
Try acrostics. My students really like this game, especially when ice creams await the winners.
Acrostics is a game in which the class is divided into groups of three or four. The teacher writes vertically on the whiteboard a (preferably) long noun from top to bottom, then rewrites the same noun from bottom to top with space in between. Students then use dictionaries to find words beginning with the letter from the left-writing and ending in the right-writing.
Example:
e...........t
l...........n
e...........a
p...........h
h...........p
a...........e
n...........l
t...........e
Points are awarded for each letter between the words.
Highest total wins. One can limit the words to nouns, or go all out and make any word fair game.
All students need are dictionaries, preferably the same dictionaries.
