For context/settings, I'd use agriculture. I once heard of someone having the same problems you are having at a school for mechanics(?) somewhere in Asia. The teacher always chose themes from the US, and never chose the topic of 'mechanics'. I think if you focus on agriculture with supporting visual aids, it may work. I'd bring them news articles (from the net, as I'm sure you won't have access to 'American Dairyman' in Korea) FROM KOREA that are written in English.
You gotta bring them something they can connect to their own lives.
