Running an English Corner

Is the idea of an English Corner to get the students to speak English or the foreign teachers to answer questions about whether they like Chinese food?

I'm thinking the former but what happens with ours is the latter.

I feel like I have the creativity of a flea in this. Can you give me some ideas that work that will make for an English Corner where the students do most of the talking?

So far, we get from 10 - 40 students turn up. In a school of 3,000, those figures are low and I can only guess it's because many students don't get/won't take the opportunity to speak up or because we are not inspiring them.

I went to one English Corner at another university recently where there was 150 or more students, all standing in groups just airing their opinions. It was amazing and interesting to be involved with it and I would love ours to eventually be like that.

My school is not quite a year old and we are the first foreign teachers with no previous english corner experience to draw on.

Your assistance would be gracefully appreciated.

Rosalind
