Re: English Corner

In Response To: English Corner (Dr. Yanni Zack- ESL Tips and Strategies)

I have taught in Chinese universities for four years. By far the most successful English Corners are those that are planned and conducted by the students. I am the student adviser for English Corner in the Teachers College in Qingdao University. I meet weekly with the three students that have been appointed by the dean to plan and conduct English Corner. The students invite an English-speaking teacher each week to give a fifteen minute talk on a topic that the students have selected. Then the students turn the English Corner into a game to encourage the other students to come to the front of the room and give a short talk in English. This lasts for about forty-five minutes, then the students show a movie in English. I help select the appropriate movie. (The list of vocabulary words and phrases is a very worth while part of the program.)

We have between 100 and 250 students attend each week.

I stay in the background and coach the students. These kids are really amazing. Last week (the first week of fall semester, 2006) we had eight freshman students, still in their military training dress, stand in front of the English Corner participants and share their dreams, expectations and fears about college life. These become very tender moments.
