I don't think that there is one and only one way to learn a language. I think that all of the ideas you presented are good ones, and need to be used together in learning a language.

I know that when I was learning how to speak Spanish, I would always watch Spanish Language Television (especially the telenovelas and news or noticias) as a way to develop my Spanish Speaking skills. Also, I always would practice with other individuals and ask them to speak Spanish to me. This was especially helpful when I shopped or ate in Spanish Stores or Restaurants.

When I have taught ESL learners, I have always encouraged them to practice speaking English with their friends and whereever they go, as well as to watch English Television Newscasts.
