Thank you for posting some excellent advice which applies when working with any type of ESL Student.

Teachers always have to remember to be positive and to have a "Can Do" attitude when it comes to seeing their students become successful.

Your post reminds me of a situation I was in many years ago when I was teaching a young Hispanic child how to read. She had tremendous difficulty in reading due to a low self-esteem issue. I told her to believe in herself, and then read to her the story of The Little Engine That Could. I told her to always think and remember what the Little Engine did and how the Little Engine began to say "I think I can". This little Hispanic girl applied this strategy of "I think I can" and began to read. In fact, she bacame so happy, that she would read all of the time. Her self-esteem improved greatly, as did her reading ability and skills.
