Teaching students how to speak English is very important. I like how you plan to have students describe orally what they see in funny pictures. Another way to have students learn and practice speaking English is to have students pair up and interview each other. Then, each pair would go to the front of the room and "introduce" their partner to the class. This will help students not only develop speaking skills, but will also develop their good listener skills as well.
