Multi-Level Teaching
By:Dr. Yanni Zack- ESL Tips and Strategies <drzack@zackeducationalservices.com>

Dear Dr.Zack,

My name is Miss Ameena, I'm writing you from Egypt .I am teaching adult students an English course, I'm teaching different levels for the time being. My major problem is that I almost always get at a loss about preparing for my first classes because I have to prepare a great deal of materials, and I don't know enough sources on line. I'm going to start work next Monday, probably. I hope I can get your reply as soon as possible.

Another thing I need you to help me with is that I know, as much as you of course do, one way to improve your English speaking skills is to speak with native English speakers. And I do not have that opportunity, so I hope you can find some possible solution for this Problem.

I look forward to having your reply

Thank you,

Dear Ameena,

Thank you for your question. Teaching several different levels of students all within the same classroom can be very difficult. Here is a suggestion: Look through the material you have and find concepts which are commonly found and taught in each different level. Then, take those common concepts and create activities which would be easily understood by all of the students. You might also want to have the students who can easily understand the concept become a "teacher" and have them explain the concept to the other students. Remember to use hands-on activities with the students. Also, use lots of visuals.

Even though you find it difficult to practice your English Language Skills, make sure you do so on a daily basis. When your friends or people that you come in contact with each day want to speak with you, ask them to only use English. That way, you will get to practice your oral fluency skills and expand your English Vocabulary.
