How to Teach Idioms
By:Dr. Yanni Zack- ESL Teaching Tips and Strategies <drzack@zackeducationalservices.com>
In Response To: How to teach idioms? (Brock Penner)

Dear Brock,

Teaching ESL Students Idioms can be difficult.
Here is a suggestion you might want to try:

You might consider using pictures or visuals, and making your own picture card for a given idiom. For example, for the idiom "blind as a bat", I would make a card or draw a picture of a bat (the animal) that is blind and is using a cane. The students will enjoy this, and you will be able to show the meaning of the idiom.
