Jeff,
Welcome to the world of being an ESL Teacher. For starters, I would do a quick assessment to determine where they are- i.e. are they in the Listening stage, Pre-production stage, Production stage or Fluency stage in terms of Oral Language. A good strategy would be to use lots of visuals, i.e. pictures with the students, and to go slow. If they are at the listening stage, then again use lots of visuals, and have them repeat the words, and also use TPR (Total Physical Response) Teaching, such as "touch your nose, point to your eyes, etc.
A good game to use is "Simon Says".
