What you are doing is similar to the concept of "Top Down" and "Bottom Up" teaching. In "Top Down", you start out with the final product(your final exam) already established and then teach to the end goals. In "Bottom Up" teaching, you start out with the parts and then create the final product. Just remember that you don't want to only teach to the test- you want to make sure that your students understand, comprehend and can apply the information learned so they will be able to use it in their next class.
