ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
I teach at a middle school and a high school in Korea. At the high school students study agriculture as well. I'm no expert - prior to this position I taught English at a hagwon in Korea and adult foreign students in my country. I'm at my wits end with the high school students who are just not interested in English. I spend endles hours on the net looking for ideas but to no avail. I enter the classroom with so much enthusiasm for an idea/activity that I'm about to use and - poof - no response. The students don't dislike me, on the contrary. They are very excited to see me at all other times, mechanically still greeting me with 'Hi Sandy. Nice to meet you.' I'm at the stage where I'm only using vocabulary games and even this does not achieve one hundred percent co-operation. Using only vocabulary games at this level and age makes me feel guilty as their is no dialog/conversation and it requires no real work on my part. I'm spirited and energetic but fear that soon these qualities will desert me and take up residence elsewhere! Pleeeeez help!
