Vocabulary and Speaking Activities for Secondary School Students (age 14-20)
By:Patrick Malone <pmalone10@gmail.com>

Hello. I'm a ESL teacher with the Peace Corps in the Sub-Saharan East African nation of Rwanda. I'm in the middle of the second term (they operate on a trimester system) and am still struggling to design good, effective vocabulary and speaking activities. I typically design weekly themes (famous African women, for example) but have been falling back on matching activities (match the word to its definition) for vocabulary instruction and dialogues for speaking instruction. For a heterogeneous Adult classroom in the United States, matching has always been effective. But it doesn't seem to translate its appeal to the Rwandan classroom. If anyone has any good ideas for vocabulary and speaking instruction and could float them my way at [my email address above], it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
