Re new to the esl scene

Jen,

it is a bit difficult to give a concrete advice because you have not included details on the English language skill level of your student. From a practical point of view, you may start with Phonics up to practising reading comprehension with more advanced students. And there are a lot of things between these two levels. So, at this point, based on the scarce information we have from you, I could only say that you get yourself a good textbook focusing on writing and reading skill levels of English and follow that curriculum. See what you can make out of it and how your students respond. If there are problems, you may need to adjust accordingly. All this would only make sense if your students already know Oral English good enough - speaking and listening (understanding) always comes first and before reading and writing.

Sorry that I can't be of more concrete help at this point!
