ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
I have a very diverse class as well. I have found these strategies extremely useful when working with ESL children (especially in the primary grades)
- use a lot of pictures to show what you are talking about
- highlight only the important words for them so that they are not overwhelmed with a lot of "useless" words with what you are talking about
- pre- teach them the vocabulary you are going to be using, and have them translate or even write out what that word is in their own language
- chunk their work
- have them draw and label pictures instead of writing out a lot of words
- label different things around your classroom in English ( like chairs, desks, whiteboard, computer etc.) so they can put a word to an actual object
- only focus on one area of improvement- such as adding periods or capital letters to their work- do not focus on too many parts all at once
- have them create dual language signs for the classroom
- have them take pictures of the things around them that they want to learn the English for, and make a book using the pictures, and English and their own language underneath it- sort of like a picture dictionary
- create a lot of group work for them so they can learn off other students.
Those are just some of them that I have used in my own classroom.
I hope it helps! Good Luck!
