Teaching one absolute beginner

Hello,

I would like to ask for advice on strategies to use to teach one absolute beginner in a class of beginners that read at the 1st/2nd grade level. I work in a high school with a small ESL program and so all the beginners, regardless of level, literacy, or time spent in U.S. are in the same class.

I have no materials for absolute beginners except Rosetta Stone. I teach this class two hours a day and am wondering what else I can do for this student. I have a Spanish-speaking paraprofessional for one of the two hours but she also needs to work with the other students when they need translation.

The student has been in the U. S. a week and knows the alphabet but little else. He appears to be fairly literate in his native language, Spanish.

Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.
