I teach a group of about nine Spanish speaking adults. Their levels of proficiency vary from pretty good English to very little. I have a reading program that I used before I retired. (this past summer) but it was aimed at illiterate adults, not ESL adults. Right now I am putting lesson plans together as I go. We only meet for two and one-half to three hours once a week. To meet more often would not be practical for these students. When I asked what these students what they hoped to learn from this class, I received two answers: The first was so they could pass college entrance exams; the second was they wanted to become more proficient in conversational English. In each class, we read aloud, study vocabulary, practice sounds, practice spelling common words (days of the week, etc). I just need to know if I should teach parts of speech and spelling rules from my old reading program. Please Help! I want to give these good people the very best that I can. (I am not bilingual)
