Adavnced and proficiency students
By:Anna <enlv@hotmail.com>

Hi
I have a couple of years' ESL experience, but this year I am teaching advanced and proficiency students for the first time, and having some big problems! I've tried debates, roleplays, practice exams, grammar games etc., but nothing seems to interest them. I find that restricted-practice material is always too easy for them - for example grammar games; and authentic practices, such as debates, don't challenge them because they are so high level. But if I challange them by doing practice exams with extended speaking components, they say they can't (and won't) do it. Basically, I'm not sure if I know what they need at this level and how I can help them? I want to keep them motivated but this just seems like an impossible task. Maybe I'm just not cut out to teach this level??
Thanks very much for your help!
